Rufus , Paperback. About this product Product Information The Buddha. Rene Descartes. Emily Dickinson. But then, I believe Rufus' target audience is the introvert. Is is a poetic tribute to the value of loners, the people who prefer daydreaming to club-hopping, and the various social misconceptions that make life for people like me rather trying. There are plenty of misconceptions about loners and introverts. Like it or not, unless they are also introverts, pretty much everyone you know is going to make you feel like there's something wrong with you.
Because our society is built around extroverts and caters to the social animal, people who are drained rather than energized by socializing get marginalized, snubbed, or face chronic exhaustion. And unless you can find other people like yourself, the loner can spend their life in a rather lonely state. It's sometimes hard for me to articulate how I see the world and how I feel living in it. Party of One articulates it for me. A loner surrounded by extroversion gets overwhelmed fast. I've learned to cope over the years, but I'm just a fake. I can get by with fake extroversion for a while, but I can't sustain it.
Knowing that there are other people out there who crave the same kind of solitude that I do, and reading a book written by one of them in such lovely prose, makes me feel less alone. Less like a freak. After all, the majority of creative types throughout history were loners to one degree or another. If you don't feel like making small talk, and aren't interested in heading out to the latest bash or rave; if you find yourself uncomfortable in crowds, and aren't ready to put the lampshade on your head, this book is for you.
A must read for every loner who has ever felt there is something wrong with them - or for every extrovert who is convinced there is something wrong with loners. The author does a wonderful job of crushing pervasive myths about the "loner", including a nice job addressing the constant portrayal of the loner as serial killer - not to mention its opposite, the serial killer as loner.
Read it, then send it to all those trying desperately to get you to be their bosom buddy. An excellent and overdue book for the shy, the introverted, and the loners. The people who are just find spending much of their time alone and still leading happy, fulfilling lives. Rufus documents the way that loners are given a bad name and a hard time in society.
Party of One: The Loners' Manifesto
A good book for a loner looking for affirmation for their lifestyle and especially for the sociable extroverts to understand the loners in their life. This book fulfills the title's promise of a manifesto--loners are portrayed here as misunderstood and discriminated against by a society that favors the sociable.
While Rufus uses evidence well, the tone borders on jarring. Further, the book doesn't provide enough gradation in its definitions of loner--a person who might self-identify as a loner like me , might very well read this book and decide that she's not, in fact, lonerish enough to qualify. Engaging and lovely prose, however. Here at Walmart. Your email address will never be sold or distributed to a third party for any reason.
